The Catalan language (catala is the self-government and the official name in the autonomous community of Catalonia, of the Balearic Islands, Andorra, the Italian city of Alghero, the Strip of Aragon and traditional denomination in the French region of Roussillon) or Valencian language (valenci is the self-call and the official denomination in the Valencian Community 2 and traditional in the Murcia region of El Carche) is a Romance language spoken by about ten million people (including non-native speakers) in Catalonia, the Valencian Community (except in some inland counties), the Balearic Islands, Andorra, the Aragon Strip, El Carche (a region of the Region of Murcia populated by Valencian immigrants), the Roussillon, the Sardinian city of Alghero and in small communities around the world (among which stands out argentina, with 195,000 speakers).

It has about ten million speakers, about half of whom are native; its linguistic domain, with an area of 68,730 km2 and 13,529,127 inhabitants (2009),10 includes 1687 municipal terms. Like the other Romance languages, Catalan descends from vulgar Latin spoken by the Romans who settled in Hispania during the Ancient Age.

The degree of use and officiality of Catalan varies greatly depending on the territory, ranging from the null and void officiality in France to being the only official language in Andorra, to co-officiality in three autonomous Spanish communities. According to a study by the Institute of Statistics of Catalonia in 2008, the Catalan language is the second most commonly used in Catalonia, after the Spanish language, which surpasses Catalan not only as a regular language, but also as a mother tongue and identification language, although Catalan is the most used in five of the seven functional areas of Catalonia and 80% of the population knows how to speak it. Each aspect and social context of the use of language in Catalonia is studied by the Generalitat de Catalunya in order to promote its use, where it is the main language in education, in public administrations and in the public media; in addition, it invests annually in the promotion of Catalan in both Catalonia and other territories
