The philosophy (from ancient Greek 'love of wisdom' derived from φιλεῖν 'love' and 'sofia] 'wisdom';1 trans. in Latin as philosoph.a)2 is the study of a variety of fundamental problems about issues such as existence, knowledge, truth, morality, beauty, mind and language.
In addressing these problems, philosophy is distinguished from mysticism, esotericism, mythology, and religion by its emphasis on rational arguments about arguments of authority, and science because it generally conducts its research in a non-empirical way, whether through conceptual analysis, mental experiments, speculation, or other a priori methods, though without ignoring the importance of empirical data.
Western philosophy has had a profound influence and in turn has been deeply influenced by Western science, religion and politics.10 11 Many important philosophers were both great scientists, theologians or politicians and some fundamental notions of these disciplines are still the subject of philosophical study. This overlap between disciplines is because philosophy is a very broad discipline.
