Twitter (IPA pronunciation [ˈtwɪtər]) (NYSE: TWTR) is a microblogging service, based in San Francisco, California, USA. USA, with subsidiaries in San Antonio (Texas) and Boston (Massachusetts) in the United States. Twitter, Inc. was originally created in California, but has been under the jurisdiction of Delaware since 2007.5 Since Jack Dorsey created it in March 2006, and launched it in July of the same year, the network has gained worldwide popularity and is estimated to have more than 300 million users, generating 65 million tweets per day and handling more than 800,000 search requests daily.6 It has been dubbed as the "SMS of Internet'.
The network allows you to send plain text messages of short length, with a maximum of 280 characters (originally 140), called tweets89 or tweets, which are displayed on the user's home page. Users can subscribe to other users' tweets – this is called "following" and subscribers are called followers, 10 followers and sometimes tweeps11 (Twitter + peeps, novice followers who haven't made many tweets yet). By default, the messages are public, and can be disseminated privately showing only to certain followers. Users can tweet from the service's website, with external official applications (such as for smartphones), or through the Short Message Service (SMS) available in certain countries.12 Although the service is free, accessing it via SMS involves supporting rates set by the mobile phone provider.
As of April 27, 2015, it is known that the domain was registered 15 years and 99 days ago,13 but three aspects are still unclear: the exact date of public presentation of the project, whether or not tweets can be redirected and whether Twitter shares internal messages between users with the NSA.
Twitter currently invoices more than 2500 million dollars annually and has a stock market value of more than 10 billion dollars.
