Veganism1 or strict vegetarianism is the abstention from the use of products and services of animal origin, whether for food, clothing, medicines, cosmetics, transportation, experimentation, help at work or entertainment, except in the latter case of pets. Veganism is defined as a lifestyle, as an ideology, and by some detractors as a cult. Vegans are called vegans, as are vegan-friendly products and services.

The fundamentals of veganism include ethical, environmental, health, and humanitarian arguments, although there is debate and controversy over the soundness of those arguments.

The main products and services excluded in veganism are: meat, egg, honey, milk and derivatives (such as cheese or yogurt); leather, wool and furs; cosmetics and drugs tested on animals; and they also reject the use of animals in zoos, circuses, as draft animals, etc.

As with any poorly planned diet, an unbalanced vegan diet can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies. Some of these deficiencies can only be prevented with fortified foods or regular intake of dietary or vitamin supplements, for which personalized education and evaluation by nutrition professionals is essential. Some nutritionists consider vegan diets – well planned – to be appropriate for all stages of life, but others do not recommend them in infants, children, adolescents, the elderly, pregnant women or while breastfeeding.

The history of veganism is mixed with that of vegetarianism. Since ancient times there have been people who have renounced the consumption of animal products, but the term veganism is modern: it was coined in 1944 by Donald Watson with the aim of differentiating it from vegetarianism, which rejects the consumption of meat but accepts the consumption of other products of animal origin, such as milk, eggs and cheese. Today, veganism is a minority and even marginal, but fast-growing lifestyle.
