Harmony or harmony (from the Greek "ἁρμονία") in music is the study of the technique for linking chords (simultaneous notes). From a general perspective, harmony is the balance of proportions between the different parts of a whole, and its result always connotes beauty. In music, the study of harmony involves chords and their construction, as well as chord progressions and the principles of connection that govern them. Harmony is generally understood to refer to the "vertical" aspect (simultaneous notes, which in the score are written one on top of another) of the music, which is distinguished from the "horizontal" aspect (the melody, formed by the succession of notes, which are written one after another).
